This was
the first erotic photograph I ever bought. At midnight on Friday 6, July 1990,
I with a friend left Lincolnshire to re-enact the song "I Drove All
Night" by Cyndi Lauper which was released in 1989. The song was originally
written for Roy Orbison although his version, recorded in 1987 was not released
until 1992, four years after his death in 1988. We arrived at Fort Augustus at
10am on the Saturday morning having suffered such obstacles as a puncture at Scotch
Corner after a fellow roadgoer had kindly punched out there windscreen on a
forecourt of a garage I filled up at. The Hotel was very grand, a large stone
building on the banks of Loch Ness. The Hotel was festooned with tartan and
Stags heads and stuffed fish mounted on the walls. I bought the photograph from
a visitors centre on the banks of Loch Ness. On the Sunday the FIFA World Cup
final took place between West Germany and Argentina. It was the first World Cup
final to involve the previous finalists. It was also the first final to include
a player being sent off. It was a bad tempered match with many fouls and
penalty appeals. In the end West Germany won 1-0 having scored from the penalty
spot six minutes from the end of normal time. The penalty having been scored by
Andreas Brehme. Argentina only had nine men on the pitch at the end of the
match, one Pedro Monzon becoming the first player in history to be sent off in
a final having been shown a straight red and Gustavo Dezotti was shown a second
yellow card and asked to leave the pitch.
